What is Disc Dog (Dogs Flying Disks)?

Disc dog is a sport and recreational activity where dogs and their humans compete in events such as distance catching and freestyle routines using flying discs (Frisbees). The most famous example is the Frisbee dog competitions seen at halftime at sports events.

Types of Events

1. Toss and Fetch (Distance/Accuracy):

  • The handler throws discs as far as possible.
  • The dog brings the disc back.
  • Points are awarded based on distance and successful catches.

2. Freestyle:

  • Handler and dog perform a choreographed routine set to music.
  • Involves tricks, flips, multiple discs, and creative moves.
  • Judged on difficulty, creativity, and dog-handler interaction.

Popular Dog Breeds for Disk Flying

Some breeds excel in this sport due to agility, speed, and drive:

  • Border Collies
  • Australian Shepherds
  • Belgian Malinois
  • Whippets
  • Labradors
  • Many mixed breeds also do very well!

How To Get Started

  1. Choose a Safe Disc: Human-use Frisbees can hurt dogs’ mouths. Opt for dog-safe discs, which are softer.
  2. Teach the “Fetch”: Start with rolling the disc on the ground.
  3. Build Up: Gradually move to short, low throws before attempting higher or longer throws.
  4. Pace the Dog: Avoid overexertion, especially in heat.
  5. Join Clubs or Events: Many local and national clubs (such as the US Disc Dog Nationals) offer competitions and clinics.

Safety Tips

  • Use only discs designed for dogs.
  • Play on soft surfaces to reduce impact injuries.
  • Ensure warm-up and cool-down for the dog.
  • Monitor for signs of fatigue or overexertion.

Fun Fact

This sport became popular after 1974, when a man named Ashley Whippet stunned a national audience during a baseball game by performing frisbee tricks with his dog!
