Slip Collars

What Are They? Slip collars, sometimes called slip leads or choke chains, are a type of collar made from a single piece of material (often nylon or chain) that loops through itself. When tension is applied, the collar tightens around the dog’s neck.

Main Uses:

  • Training dogs to walk on the leash without pulling.
  • Used often in obedience and show rings.

How They Work: When the dog pulls, the collar tightens; when the dog stops pulling, it loosens.

Pros:

  • Quick to slip on and off.
  • Can provide clear, instant correction.
  • Effective for leash training if used properly.

Cons:

  • Potential for neck injury or choking if misused.
  • No limit on how tight it can get (risk of harm).
  • Not recommended for unsupervised use or for breeds prone to tracheal collapse.

Safety Tips:

  • Train with professional guidance.
  • Never leave a dog unattended with a slip collar on.
  • Do not use on puppies or small/thin-necked dogs.

Martingale Collars

What Are They? Martingale collars are also known as “limited-slip” collars. They feature two loops: a main collar loop and a smaller control loop. When the dog pulls, the smaller loop tightens, limiting how much the collar can tighten around the neck.

Main Uses:

  • Preventing dogs (especially sighthounds like Greyhounds and Whippets) from backing out of collars.
  • Gentle correction during leash walking or training.

How They Work: The control loop tightens with tension, but there is a built-in stop so the collar does not choke the dog.

Pros:

  • Much safer than plain slip or choke collars.
  • More humane as it prevents choking.
  • Hard for dogs to slip out of.
  • Suitable for most dog breeds and sizes.

Cons:

  • Should be properly fitted; too loose and it slips off, too tight and it acts like a slip/choke collar.
  • Not recommended for unsupervised wear (risk of snagging).

Safety Tips:

  • Adjust so the collar is snug but not tight when the control loop is pulled taut.
  • Remove when at home or playing with other dogs to prevent snagging.
