Types of Basic Collars

1. Flat Buckle Collar

• Description: The most common type. A simple flat strip of material with a buckle enclosure.
• Materials: Nylon, leather, polyester.
• Pros: Comfortable, easy to use, good for everyday wear.
• Best for: Most dogs.

2. Quick-Release Collar

• Description: Similar to flat buckle collars but with a snap-in plastic buckle for easy on/off.
• Pros: Convenient, fast to remove in emergencies.
• Best for: Puppies, active dogs, or those who play with other dogs.

3. Martingale Collar

• Description: A limited-slip collar often used for dogs who can slip out of regular collars.
• Materials: Usually nylon with a small chain section or extra loop.
• Pros: Prevents slipping without choking.
• Best for: Sighthounds, rescue dogs, or “escape artists.”

4. Slip Collar (Not Recommended for Beginners)

• Description: Also called a choke chain; tightens when pulled.
• Pros: Used for training but requires skill.
• Cons: Can cause injury if misused.
• Best for: Training experienced handlers only.

Sizing and Fit

• Fit tip: You should be able to slide two fingers comfortably between the collar and your dog’s neck.
• Measure: Use a cloth tape measure around the base of your dog’s neck and add about 1-2”.
• Check regularly: Puppies grow quickly! Adjust as needed.
